Dehydration on the Job

Did you know?

One of the biggest threats to any workplace is dehydration. It’s a threat even to those sitting in an office. For those in the plumbing, construction, or some other physical or technical industry, dehydration issues are even more prevalent. May Supply promotes healthy hydration with an Elkay ezH20 Water Bottle Station for customer and employee use as well as many other filtered water sources throughout the building. Many other companies have similar policies and tools to help their employees stay hydrated.

Water vs. Soda

Now, we also offer sodas through a soda machine at May Supply, but drinking too much caffeine can actually cause dehydration. That is why it is important to make sure you balance your soda and water intake.

“Since caffeinated sodas can make you need to use the restroom frequently, do not consume them if you are exercising or if you live in a hot climate. You may be more likely to suffer from effects of dehydration, such as thirst and fatigue. Water has the opposite effect. Drinking water keeps you fully hydrated so you can drink it while working out or playing in the sun.” SF Gate

Keeping it Cool

So drinking soda can be even more harmful when your physically exerting yourself? Yes. That means that on the job site, where you are sweating and losing the water in your body, it’s even more important to make sure you have water on hand. Even without soda, sweating or getting rid of bodily fluids in any way increases your level of dehydration. Since summer months are pretty hot around here, we recommend keeping a lot of water on hand. You may even want to keep your water cool so you can cool down.

“But, keeping it cool requires me to refill my cooler with ice or have a refrigerator on hand.”

Nah. You can grab yourself a Caribou Cooler or Tumbler, or some similar product. The Caribou cooler has a rotomolded, seamless insulated design covered by a 5 year warranty. The Tumblers are extremely durable and have double insulated walls to keep your drink colder (or hotter) for longer. There are other similar products out there, but for the quality and price point on the Caribou, you can’t go wrong. Just put your ice and water in it at the beginning of the day and you should be good to go all day without worrying about the ice melting or the contents getting warm.

How to Spot Dehydration

You can lead a horse to water… but you can’t make it drink… So here’s how you can spot dehydration:

  • Extreme Thirst
  • Less Frequent Bathroom Trips
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Red Skin Tone
